Arnold Schwarzenegger's was an early 'entrepreneur'

In 1969, At the age of 22 Arnold Schwarzenegger started a mail-order
business, buying ads in magazines, selling bodybuilding products, and
building a list of buyers.

"By the age of 30, Schwarzenegger was a millionaire, well before his career in
Hollywood. His financial independence came from his success as a budding
entrepreneur with a series of successful business ventures and investments"
says his page on Wikipedia.

Reading his biography 'Total Recall'. Here's what he said about his early days in America,
after being brought over by his mentor Joe Weider:

"The money Joe paid me never went very far. I was always looking for ways to
earn more. I would give seminars at  Golds and other gyms. Each netted $500.

I also launched a mail-order business out of my apartment. It grew out of the fan
mail I was getting. People wanted to know how I trained my arms, my chest.
And they asked how they could git themselves.

I couldn't answer all these letters, so in the beginning, I got the writers at the
Joe Weider magazine to help me with standard letters that I could send out.
That gave me the idea of selling a series of booklets.

In America, unlike Europe, there weren't a million obstacles to starting a
business. All I had to do was go down to city hall and pay $3.75 for a permit,
and then rent a post office box to receive the orders.

When Franco and I started a bricklaying business it was the same thing.
We walked out shaking our heads, and Franco said, "This is why they call
this the land of opportunity." We were so happy.
[...] Joe Weider was big in mail order of course, but he didn't really see his
bodybuilders as competition.

Many bodybuilders failed at mail order because they'd accept the money but
not get it together to mail the product. You had to fill your orders within a
certain time by law. If the post office received complaints, it would take away
your post office box, and your business would be gone.

[...]  But I was super-efficient.  There were bins for incoming mail, checks,
envelopes, and outgoing orders. My booklets were a success. Soon I added
an Arnold Schwarzenegger weight-lifting belt and other products, enough for
a double-page ad. This brought in even more business.

I always showed Joe any ad I wrote before putting it in the magazine because
he was a merchandising genius. "Why didn't you write 'Fill within days'?" he'd ask.
'Put that in the ad! People want to know you're dependable! And you should say
'This booklet is a limited edition'! People love limited editions'
.

I loved being an American entrepreneur. With mail order I was doing what
Charles Atlas had done!"

I found this passage fascinating. Arnold was buying advertising space, driving
traffic to his offers, building a list, and selling products!

I always remind my seminar attendees of this 'Millionaire Secret'... sell products,
don't sell your time. If you sell products, your earning potential becomes
uncapped!

He ran his business from home, building his list, like a modern-day laptop
entrepreneur.

And new products were created easily by simply interviewing experts with... a
little tape recorder!

"Joe Weider asked if I would take a tape recorder ad interview the other
bodybuilders.
I didn't have to write the stories, just make the tapes, and the
writers would turn them
into a series of articles giving readers the inside scoop.

All I had to do was talk to the
others about their training routines, their diet,
what vitamins they took, and so on."

Arnold barely spoke English and yet found success in the mail-order business.
If you're reading these lines right now, you can do it too!

p.s.
Schwarzenegger only found success in Hollywood movies at the age of 35,
in the 1982 swashbuckling epic 'Conan The Barbarian'

7 Success and Business Lessons from Barrack Obama!

Illinois Senator,Barrack Obama has made history by becoming the first black American to rule the US.While I am happy about the feat,I just want to point out some success and business lessons we can learn from him in this post.

Here are seven success and business lessons I have learnt about Obama’s rise to Presidency

1.You don't need everybody's vote to win an election

A very successful man once said, “I don’t know what the secret to success is, but I do know the secret to failure: trying to please everyone.” You do NOT need everyone to vote for you, you need the majority (and in the case of entrepreneurs, a small minority is enough to make you a million bucks).
Stop trying to cater to everyone. Don’t try to please old and young, rich and poor, Republicans and Democrats… focus instead on those who will vote for you in life. Take care of them, and they’ll take care of you. What I mean by this is,as a business owner or success seeker, have a target market.Don't say the whole world is my market,it's wrong.Cater to a small group of willing buyers and you will be made for life.Your market may be teenagers, kids, elderly people, just think about which market you want to serve and face them squarely.

2.Determine the single greatest desire of your target market, and then center your marketing approach around that desire. Identify yourself with that desire. In this election, there were many different urgent issues at stake. There is the lagging economy, the war in Iraq, and the disastrous housing market, among other things. Overall, the American people are unhappy. What do people want when they are unhappy in general? Change.

If you are unhappy, you want your situation to change, period. Change is the simplified answer to the nations’ problems, and Obama and his campaign took advantage of that desire for change to entrench himself as the President America needs at this moment. ‘Change you can believe in’ and ‘Obama for Change’ are incredibly smart campaign slogans, and it is no wonder that the candidate who is using them is the candidate that is ahead in the polls.

By identifying himself and making himself synonymous with the American publics’ main desire,Obama has marketed himself to success. So,as a success seeker or business owner, you need to identify your target market's most hungry desire and give it to them just as they need it.What I am saying in essence is,don't sit in your house and assume this is what will sell, let the market tell you what it wants and give it to them just as Obama did.

3.Marketing is key.

One thing that kept Obama clearly in the lead throughout the campaigns and polls was his innate ability to market himself and his ideas to high heavens. Not only did he market his ideologies and policies,he also marketed himself. He built himself as a brand. All I would just say is this guy marketed himself, his campaign organisation well and it paid off at the end. So,if you are looking for success, marketing your product, service or ideas has to occupy a pride of place in your heart, otherwise, nothing will happen.Master the art and science of marketing and you will be the better for it.Don't just market but have a marketing plan in place.Build a marketing plan around the desires of the market you are serving and you will be happy you did.

4:Because no one has done it in the past, doesn’t mean it cannot be done

When setting out on your goals, you may not find anyone who has done what you are planning to do. You may incorrectly come to the conclusion that it cannot be done because of the past history. But remember: every creation of God has a beginning. And once it has been done once, it will be easy to duplicate.

5:Don’t listen to negative people

I was listening, last year, to “experts” commenting on the presidential election, and I distinctly remember the “expert” explicitly point out how America would never ever elect an African American to be their President.

I wonder what that “expert” is saying now.

Take intelligent counsel but always put your heart into what you are doing. In the end, if you open your mind and listen to your heart… you can’t go wrong. While seeking expert advice for whatever you want to do,allow your gut instincts to guide you.Everybody said it couldn't be done but that did not deter Obama,he went for his goal and today,he has made history.

6.You need courage,lots of courage.

Obama had lots of courage and confidence in himself and it paid off at the end.In the success equation, you also need courage and confidence in yourself to be able to push on to achieve your goals even though the whole says it's unachievable.

7.Strategic Partnering will go a long way to assist you achieve your dreams. You will agree with me that Obama enjoyed a lot of support from the Media and that made them downplay a lot of issues they would have raised against him.He had strategic partnerships while Mcain's choice of Sarah Palin,no doubt, worked against him. So,in your quest for success, look for people who will complement you so you can achieve success faster.

That's it.7 success and business lessons I learnt from Obama. One last thing though,Obama's feat has showed that you can be anything you want to become in this life.I repeat:you can be anything you want to become in this life. All you need is to have a goal, draw up a plan to achieve that goal and go after the execution of that plan ruthlessly (yes,I mean ruthlessly because success is a warfare).

See you at the top!

7 Days to ‘A Better You’.

This article you are about to read is from one of my mentors- Mrs Iyabo Oyewole. She inspire me a lot with her articles and I want you to sample this for a start. Please take your time when reading it, because you are about to experience a change in your life.
Most times, we seek success but we neglect a vital element of achieving success-self improvement. Without becoming a better you, please forget about achieving success. So what does it take to be a cut above the rest? What does it take to go from zero to hero in all aspects of your life? What exactly does it take to go from flat broke to millionaire in a few months time? Here are some of the things you can think and improve on that should be enough for a week.1. Know your purpose Are you wandering through life with little direction - hoping that you'll find happiness, health and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or mission statement and you will have your own unique compass that will lead you to your truth worth every time. This may seem tricky at first when you see yourself to be in a tight or even dead end. But there's always that little loophole to turn things around and you can make a big difference to yourself.
2. Know your values
What do you value most? Make a list of your top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning. As you set your goals for 2005 - check your goals against your values. If the goal doesn't align with any of your top five values - you may want to reconsider it or revise it.The number shouldn't discourage you, instead it should motivate you to do more than you can ever dreamed of.
3. Know your needs
Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be right, to be in control, to be loved? There are so many people who lived their lives without realizing their dreams and most of them end up being stressed or even depressed for that matter. List your top four needs and get them met before it's too late!
4. Know your passions
You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life. Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm will only hinder you, but will not derail your chance to become the person you ought to be. Express yourself and honor the people who has inspired you to become the very person you wanted to be.
5. Live from the inside out
Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Commune with nature. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most of us city slickers it's hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home. In my case I often just sit in a dimly lit room and play some classical music. There's sound, yes, but music does soothe the savage beast.
6. Honor your strengths
What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? List three - if you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify these. Are you imaginative, witty, good with your hands? Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence when you can share what you know to others.
7. Serve others
When you live authentically, you may find that you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you are true to who you are, living your purpose and giving of your talents to the world around you, you give back in service what you came to share with others -your spirit - your essence. The rewards for sharing your gift with those close to you is indeed rewarding, much more if it were to be the eyes of a stranger who can appreciate what you have done to them.
Self-improvement is indeed one type of work that is worth it. It shouldn't always be within the confines of an office building, or maybe in the four corners of your own room. The difference lies within ourselves and how much we want to change for the better.
Before I go,let me just say there are 3 types of people in the world. And over the next few months these people will be identified by their actions.
- There are people that make things happen.
- There are people that watch things happen.
- There are people that ask "What happened?"
Do not watch things happen around you.
Do not be on the short end of the stick of the economy and ask "What happened?"
Be the one to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN...
So - Then go make it happen this week!

Be Real.

I just learnt something this evening from a friend. You need to be yourself, be real. Don't pretend to be what you are not.Be the real you, then you can make a lot of difference in whatever you do.

Also, the best inspiration you can get apart from the one from God,is tha which comes from you.Yes, from you yourself. You got to inspire yourself to be the best,to be what you want to be in whatever you do.

Be motivated, be inspired, be what you what to be.

HOW TO ATTAIN GREATNESS THROUGH SELF-MOTIVATION

1. UNDERSTANDING GREATNESS Greatness is more than success; whereas success is limited to a particular area, at a particular time of one's life, greatness is a wholesome phenomenon. Greatness is a combination of several successes in a person's life that brings him public recognition and personal fulfillment. It is an immeasurable state of achievement in life.

A great warrior is one who has fought and won several battles and wars. In life there are several battles, some are spiritual, while some are physical. These battles go on in different areas such as finances, family, friends, health, business, education, leadership and even religion etc. When success is attained in all or majority of these areas, then the person who attains such successes can be branded as a great personality.

You are not truly great until other people become successful through your direct or indirect input. To be great in life, you need to be committed to ensuring that you raise several successful people in your LIFE'S NETWORK. Your greatness is only confirmed by the testimonials from this network of successful people. The bottom line is; you can never be great without impacting positively on other people.

2. WHAT IS SELF-MOTIVATION Motivation is an inducement with a motive that causes motion or action. There is a motive behind every action and this motive produces a force that enhances the performance or outcome of that action. A man who is motivated or induced with a motive will naturally perform better than a man without any form of motivation. The absence of motivation produces nonchalance and/or laziness. Failure is a result of inaction and inaction is a result of lack of motivation, failure also is antagonistic to motivation. It can kill motivation when given the chance. A great man is one who has learnt how to handle his failures and fears.

Self-motivation therefore is the act of staying focused on your motive and translating its power into a productive action with positive result. It is an internal push within a person that causes him to take action in line with his motive. Self-motivation makes you active. It is the activation of a person's life caused by the motives in his heart. I boldly prescribe Self-motivation as the antidote for laziness and failure.

3. ATTAINING GREATNESS To be great in life, you need to be a proactive person and the motive behind all you do on a daily bases should be hinged on attaining greatness. When your state of mind is centered around greatness, it will make you to be two things: A. An active person B. A peoples person

You need to work and you need to be people conscious if you must be great. You do not necessarily have to do hard work but you need to work hard and better still, you need to work smart. Your aim should be to make as much people as you can successful in life. This consciousness will keep you self-motivated at all times because you will always have what to do and you will always meet people who need your help. So, stay motivated with good motives and your greatness in life with time will become obvious. P.S. In order to remain self-motivated and become great, you need to read books, hang around great people and hear things that are in line with your motive: in this case - GREATNESS

Attitude is Everything!

A while back,Sprite run a campaign with the wordings:"Image is nothing. Thirst is everything. Obey your thirst." They wanted us to place premium on what we drink but in today's edition of Monday Morning Dew,I want to stress the importance of attitude to our achieving success.

And that is why I called the title of this post Attitude is everything. Most times, our attitude determines if we succeed in this life or not. And that is why I agree with the saying 'Your attitude determines your altitude'.If your attitude is negative,it will affect everything you are doing. One of my highly regarded mentors,John Maxwell says,'do you feel the world is treating you well? If your attitude toward the world is excellent, you will receive excellent results. If you feel so-so about the world, your response from that world will be average. Feel badly about your world and you will seem to have only negative feedback from life.'

You see,you cannot stop anything from happening to you and in this world, anything can happen at any damn time. But,your attitude to that event is all that matters. Let me just say that you cannot stop bad things from happening to you but you can control how you react to it. Ok,let me just say the formula for success in this life is 90% attitude and 10% ability. I stand to be corrected on that but all I am saying is: your ability in this life matters. Have a positive attitude and you will achieve your goals faster. You will be able to turn your problems into blessings. Let me tell you the story of a friend of mine. He was sacked from a highly lucrative job during the bank consolidation era. Instead of crying and blaming everybody he knew for his misfortune,he started an Engine Oil supply business. He used to carry a tanker and was reselling to Okada drivers. In as little as 9 months,he was making a lot of money and I can tell you he has expanded the business to open other branches. So,whatever you are going through today, know that other people have and are still going through it. But determine not to allow that situation to kill your spirit. Determine to see that situation as a door to your blessings. Have you just been sacked from your workplace? Have you just lost a loved one? Did you wake up without any hope of eating today? Whatever it is you are going through, just know that having a positive attitude will help you pull through fast. So,as you go through this week, remember that Attitude is everything in this life!
